ENERGY SAVING FOR PROCESS PLANTS

Delta Star
Converter

Turn low-load running into an energy-saving opportunity.

Your motor’s workload changes. The i.MWM-IO’s built-in converter automatically changes its connection to help suitable motors use less energy when running lightly loaded.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Sized for peak demand.
Often running below it.

A motor may need a higher capacity to start its load or handle peak demand, then spend much of its running time at a lighter load. Those low-load periods can offer an opportunity to save energy.

Delta–Star conversion is intended for suitable variable-load applications. The motor’s actual loading, starting requirements and time spent lightly loaded determine the fit.

HOW IT WORKS

Adapts to the load.
Automatically.

The i.MWM-IO monitors running power and controls the power contactors. When the load changes, it can change the motor’s connection after a programmed delay.

01

Start as the application requires

The starting arrangement is selected for the motor and its load.

02

Delta for normal demand

The motor runs in Delta as the application requires.

Power falls below the set point
Power rises above the set point
03

Star during suitable low-load periods

The connection changes to Star to reduce energy use. Delta operation resumes as demand rises.

A simplified operating sequence. The power threshold and delays are set for the application.

Starting arrangements and switching settings

Operation below around 50% of rated load is identified in the product guidance as a potential opportunity. This is a screening guide; the actual Under Power set point must suit the motor and process.

Programmable delays are 3–50 seconds before switching to Star and 3–15 seconds before returning to Delta. The built-in Star–Delta timer supports suitable starting arrangements.

Certain high-inertia loads require DOL-type starting torque and therefore cannot be started in the conventional Star-Delta configuration. In such applications, the Delta-Star Energy Saving Converter starts the motor directly in Delta configuration, allowing the motor to develop the required starting torque and accelerate the high-inertia load. Once the motor reaches the required speed and the load condition becomes suitable for energy saving, the device automatically changes the motor connection from Delta to Star.

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT

Energy-saving control.
Built into motor protection.

A conventional Star–Delta starter changes the connection during startup. The i.MWM-IO also monitors running power and can return to Star during suitable light-load periods.

Responds while the motor runs

Monitors running power and switches connections as load changes, with programmed delays and no routine operator intervention.

Starting timer built in

Combines a settable Star–Delta timer with the converter, so a separate Star–Delta timer is not required.

Protection alongside savings

Includes protection for overload, phase loss, voltage faults, locked rotor and other motor fault conditions.

Connects to your plant

RS-485/Modbus communication supports integration with PLC, DCS and HMI systems for monitoring and control.

The potential benefits

Lower energy consumption during suitable low-load operation, plus improved power factor and reduced kVA demand. The product guidance also identifies cooler motor operation as a potential benefit.

Energy use (kWh), power factor and demand (kVA) are different measures. The impact on your bill depends on the measured change, running hours and your electricity tariff.
